YSU SUG hosts second annual intellectual competition, inspiring brilliance across faculties

Story from Haruna Ibrahim

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) at Yobe State University, led by President Comr. Yunusa Abdullahi, has organised the faculty-level round of its Second Annual Intellectual Competition, which includes both a debate and an impromptu speech contest.

The competition is designed to foster critical thinking, creativity, and intellectual excellence among students, and it saw active participation from various faculties. Contestants demonstrated their skills in structured debates and impromptu speaking.

According to the organisers, the event provides a platform for students to express their ideas, build confidence, and prepare for broader academic and leadership challenges.

Winners from this faculty round will go on to represent their faculties in the grand finale, where the overall champions will be crowned.

Speaking at the event, SUG President Comr. Yunusa Abdullahi Barde emphasised that the competition is part of the union’s commitment to nurturing academic excellence, innovation, and creativity among YSU students. He also used the opportunity to highlight several pressing issues of concern to the student body.

These issues included the recent tragic accident that resulted in the death of Amina Yakubu Adamu, clarification on the NELFUND initiative, and the efficient use of university buses.

He noted that the buses remain more cost-effective for students than the alternative tricycle (Keke Napep).

The event was attended by staff, students, and invited guests, who all praised the initiative for inspiring healthy competition and building intellectual capacity among participants.
