Yobe trains experts on kidney disease sample collection

The Yobe State Government, through the Biomedical Science Research and Training Center (BioRTC) at the state university, has trained physicians, renal nurses, laboratory scientists, geologists, and environmental scientists from Gashua and Damaturu.

The training, which took place on Wednesday, focused on collecting samples related to kidney disease in affected communities across the state.

During a workshop in Damaturu, Dr. Mahamud Bukar Maina, the Special Adviser to Governor Mai Mala Buni on Science, Research, and Innovation, explained that the training followed the governor’s recent visit to the United Kingdom, where he and his team forged collaborations to secure resources that would work with Yobe BioRTC in addressing the growing cases of kidney disease-related deaths, particularly in the Bade Emirate.

Dr. Maina further mentioned that Governor Buni had directed him, along with the Health Commissioner and Medical Director of the State University Teaching Hospital, to form a team with international collaborators to tackle the kidney disease crisis in the state.

He highlighted that a study had already been published, identifying Gashua as a hotspot for kidney disease cases.

“Today, we have gathered professionals from both Gashua and Damaturu for training on how to conduct the research. This includes physicians, renal nurses, lab scientists, geologists, and environmental scientists. After the training, these participants will go into the field to begin data collection,” Dr. Maina said.

He added that systematic and random samples will be taken from selected households in Gashua and Damaturu, with the households chosen using investigative software.
