WAEC releases 2025 WASSCE results with 38.32% pass rate
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, revealing a significant drop in performance compared to the previous year.
Of the 1,969,313 candidates who took the exam, only 754,545, or 38.32%, achieved a minimum of five credits, including English Language and Mathematics. This represents a substantial decrease from the 72.12% pass rate recorded in 2024.
During a press briefing in Lagos, Dr. Amos Dangut, the Head of the WAEC National Office in Nigeria, explained that the decline was due to the Council’s new method of serializing objective test papers in core subjects.
“This approach drastically reduced the incidence of collusion and made examination malpractice more difficult,” said Dangut. He noted that while there was a “dip in the performance of objective papers,” scores on the essay papers remained consistent with past years. “It’s a strong signal that candidates must rely on their own preparation,” he added.
The exam was conducted from April 24 to June 20, 2025. WAEC also introduced a new real-time digital scoring system and offered candidates a choice between the traditional paper-and-pencil format and a computer-based test (CBT) option, marking a key step toward the Council’s goal of full digitization by 2026.

“This year’s exam placed us as a foremost examining body to have conducted an achievement test using a computer-based format,” Dangut stated.
Of the total candidates, 77.06% had their results fully processed and released, while the remaining 22.94% are still being processed due to technical issues. In an effort to tackle cheating, WAEC is also withholding the results of 192,089 candidates (9.75%) for various malpractice offenses, a slight improvement from the 11.92% withheld in 2024.
“These unscrupulous elements have become a thorn in the Council’s flesh. Some even use our name to distribute fake messages. We’ve apprehended some of them, and appropriate sanctions will be applied,” Dangut said He also warned that states with outstanding debts to WAEC would not be able to access the results of their sponsored candidates until the payments are cleared.
Among the successful candidates with five credits, females outperformed males, accounting for 53.99% of the passes compared to 46.01% for males. The exam also accommodated 12,178 candidates with special needs.
