Her family confirmed her death on January 16, 2025, at Denville Hall, surrounded by loved ones.
“It is with great sadness that the family of Dame Joan Plowright, the Lady Olivier, inform you that she passed away peacefully… Her brilliant career will be remembered by many,” the family’s statement read.

She also captured younger audiences in films such as Dennis the Menace and 101 Dalmatians. Her performance in Enchanted April earned her a Golden Globe, and she notably won two Golden Globes in 1993 for her work in both film and television.
Born in Brigg, England, in 1929, Plowright’s journey began with encouragement from her family. She made her London debut in 1954, garnering critical acclaim by 1956. Her marriage to Olivier in 1961 further shaped her career as she supported his endeavours at the National Theatre and Chichester Festival Theatre.
Despite battling macular degeneration that led to blindness, Plowright’s legacy as one of Britain’s finest actors endures. She retired in 2014, saying, “When you’ve had a very good life and been lucky, which I have, well, you say, ‘it’s my turn now.’”
Her children, Richard, Tamsin, and Julie-Kate, celebrate her memory alongside countless fans who admire her timeless artistry.
