Typhoon Ragasa: Mass evacuations underway with 14 dead, over 150 missing in Taiwan

Super Typhoon Ragasa unleashed severe flooding across Taiwan, claiming at least 14 lives and leaving more than 150 people missing, officials have confirmed.

Reports from Taiwan’s National Fire Agency say 152 individuals are still unaccounted for, mainly in Hualien and other affected regions following relentless rain and inundation.

Heavy rainfall caused the Matai’an Creek Barrier Lake to overflow, flooding Guangfu Township in Hualien County. Streets were submerged nearly a storey high, while bridges and infrastructure suffered damage.

The Taiwanese Central News Agency described a scene of devastation, with vehicles swept away, landslides triggered, and mass evacuations underway.

More than 3,000 people were evacuated from high-risk areas including Guangfu, Wanrong and Fenglin townships as emergency response intensified. Authorities warn the death toll may rise further as rescue teams continue combing submerged zones.

In the Philippines, the same typhoon also claimed lives. Officials confirmed multiple fatalities in the northern regions, with six persons still missing.

Ahead of the storm’s impact in mainland China, over 1.04 million people in Guangdong province were relocated proactively. Government media reported that the province escalated its typhoon emergency level to maximum.

Ragasa’s path has caused widespread disruption across East Asia, triggering shutdowns, transport halts, and mounting humanitarian concerns as the storm powers through coastal territories.

Rescue operations remain ongoing, with teams using boats, helicopters and ground units to reach isolated communities. Officials say intensifying weather, including further rainfall, could hamper immediate relief efforts.
