Tragedy in Kwara: Gunmen attack police station, kill 5

Gunmen on motorcycles have attacked the Babanla community in Kwara State, leaving five people dead, including police officer Adejumo Wasiu.
The assault on the divisional police headquarters and local market has caused residents to flee their homes and seek safety in nearby villages.
A combined force of Nigerian Army personnel, police, Department of State Services (DSS), and local vigilantes have been mobilized and are now searching for the attackers.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the attack in a statement from spokesperson Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi. The statement, released on Sunday, provided details of the incident:

“On 8th August 2025, armed criminals numbering in their hundreds, riding on motorcycles, invaded Babanla community in Ifelodun local government area, attacked the divisional police Headquarters and raided the market. The assailants fired sporadically, killing five people, including a police officer, Adejumo Wasiu.
A swift and coordinated response by Police operatives, Nigeria Army personnel, vigilantes, and local Hunters repelled the attack, restored order, and initiated a full-scale manhunt for the perpetrators.”
Following the attack, Kwara State Commissioner of Police Adekimi Ojo and the Director of the Kwara State DSS paid a visit to the community to assess the situation. The officials met with His Royal Highness, Oba Yusuf Aliyu Alabi Arojojoye II, the traditional ruler of Babanla, to discuss security and collaboration.
The joint security delegation also toured the market and the police headquarters to ensure stability had been restored.

Commissioner Ojo has ordered increased patrols, intelligence gathering, and the deployment of specialized tracking teams, while the DSS has pledged to provide intelligence support.
The statement concluded with an assurance from the command: “The command reiterates its unwavering commitment, in synergy with sister security agencies, to safeguarding lives and property in all parts of Kwara State. Residents are urged to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative with security agencies by providing credible information.”
