Tobi Amusan secures silver medal at World Championships in Tokyo

Nigeria’s renowned athlete, Tobi Amusan, won a silver medal in the women’s 100 meters hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. She finished behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who won the race in a record-breaking time.

Kambundji, 23, set a new Swiss national record with a time of 12.24 seconds, securing Switzerland’s first-ever world title in this event. Amusan, the 2022 world champion and current world record holder, followed closely behind, clocking 12.29 seconds. This silver medal marks Nigeria’s 12th medal in the history of the World Championships.

American athlete Grace Stark claimed the bronze medal in 12.34 seconds, with her compatriot, Masai Russell, coming in fourth with a time of 12.44 seconds after a slow reaction time at the start. Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska equalled her season’s best of 12.49 seconds for fifth place, just ahead of Bahamian Devynne Charlton, who finished with the same time.

The defending champion from Jamaica, Danielle Williams, finished seventh in 12.53 seconds, while Nadine Visser of the Netherlands was eighth with a time of 12.56 seconds.

Amusan had shown strong form earlier in the semi-final, winning her heat in 12.36 seconds. In the final, she started well but couldn’t hold off Kambundji’s late surge.

This silver medal adds to Amusan’s impressive record on the global stage. In 2022, in Eugene, Oregon, she made history by becoming Nigeria’s first-ever world champion in athletics, setting a world record of 12.12 seconds in the semi-final before winning the final.

She successfully defended her continental crown at the 2024 African Championships after a difficult 2023 season where she finished sixth in Budapest due to eligibility issues.

Amusan’s performance in Tokyo further solidifies her reputation as one of Nigeria’s top track athletes, showcasing a career defined by resilience, consistency, and remarkable achievements.
