Tinubu signs North Central Development Bill into law

President Bola Tinubu has signed a bill into law to establish the North Central Development Commission.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced this in the Senate on Tuesday, noting that Tinubu also signed bills creating a federal polytechnic in Rano, Kano State, and a federal university of health sciences in Tsafe, Zamfara State.

The establishment of the North Central Development Commission aims to boost economic growth and infrastructure development in the region. Although Akpabio did not specify when the bills were signed, his announcement came one day after Tinubu approved a bill for a federal university of environmental technology in Ogoni, Rivers State.

At the signing ceremony in the Presidential Villa on Monday, Tinubu emphasized that the new university would address environmental challenges in Ogoni and broaden educational opportunities across the Niger Delta.

He stated, “For decades, the Ogoni people have been at the forefront of the fight for environmental restoration and sustainable development, shaping both national and global conversations on these critical issues.”

The Ogoni people have long been active in fighting environmental degradation caused by oil exploration, particularly by multinational corporations. In the 1990s, the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), led by the late Ken Saro-Wiwa, drew international attention to the devastation of Ogoni land, leading to widespread protests and tensions with the Nigerian government.
