The APC Meltdown and the Rise of a New Political Coalition: Nigeria at another crossroads, by Hassan Ahmad

In the corridors of Nigeria’s political power, tremors are shaking the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Once hailed as the grand coalition that unseated a sitting president in 2015, the APC is today plagued by internal rifts, ideological confusion, and mounting public anger. As the 2027 election looms on the horizon, the battle for control of Nigeria’s political destiny has begun — not on the streets, but within the collapsing house of APC and the quiet plotting of a new national coalition.

The Unravelling of APC: From Hope to Hubris

APC was born out of the desperation of a people tired of the PDP’s excesses and the arrogance of incumbency. It was a fusion of strange bedfellows — progressives and conservatives, reformers and opportunists — united by a single goal: power. But power, as always, exposed the cracks.

Today, the APC stands divided along multiple fault lines — North vs South, old guards vs new entrants, governors vs Abuja cabals, and even Tinubu loyalists vs Tinubu skeptics. Party meetings are now war zones. Consensus has become a myth. Discipline is dead. What remains is a party feeding on itself while the country bleeds.

Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who many hoped would bring clarity and cohesion, things have instead become more complicated. Factions are multiplying. Appointments are triggering silent wars. Key founding members are being sidelined. Meanwhile, the masses — who endured fuel subsidy removal, forex liberalisation, and food inflation — are growing angrier by the day.

The 2027 Calculations and Silent Realignments

2027 may seem far away, but in Nigerian politics, it is tomorrow. Political gladiators have already begun silent movements. Key figures in APC are holding midnight meetings with estranged PDP stalwarts. Disillusioned members of the Labour Party and NNPP are whispering about a merger. Northern elites, long suspicious of the current power dynamics, are considering alternatives. Southern leaders, feeling shortchanged, are also strategising.

This is how new political coalitions are born in Nigeria — in frustration, betrayal, and ambition.

A new grand coalition is gradually forming, driven by one question: Who will control post-Tinubu Nigeria?

While Tinubu may still wield influence, many believe the APC as a party may not survive its internal contradictions. It may be abandoned like PDP was in 2013, and what rises from its ashes will be shaped not by ideology, but by political survival.

What the Masses Must Demand

As political actors plot and scheme, the Nigerian people must not remain passive observers. We must not be reduced to pawns in another game of elite musical chairs. If a new coalition must rise, let it be built on clear values: restructuring, justice, economic inclusion, security, and good governance.

Let the masses demand answers from every coalition builder. What is your plan for education? For local government autonomy? For insecurity? For the unemployed youth? For Nigeria’s unity?

We have been deceived before — by slogans, party names, and rented crowds. This time, let us be wiser. Let no coalition emerge without the input and interest of the Nigerian people.

Conclusion: History Is Calling Again

Nigeria is once again at a crossroads. The APC is bleeding. The opposition is regrouping. New alliances are taking shape in silence. But the future remains uncertain. Will we repeat the mistakes of 2015 — jumping from one sinking ship to another — or will we rise with clarity, purpose, and bold leadership?

The time has come for true statesmen and women to rise. The time has come for the masses to awaken. Let no coalition be formed without the cry of the people at its heart. Let no politician wear the crown without first wearing the burden of our national suffering.

History is watching. 2027 is near. Let Nigeria not be betrayed again.
