Tackling the menace of drug abuse, by Maryam Mohammed
Story by Jessica Mbamah
The growing menace of drug abuse among youths in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria, is a pressing concern that requires immediate attention.
Maiduguri, being the epicentre of business and education in the state, should be a hub of productivity and growth, not a breeding ground for substance abuse.
Unfortunately, the rising spate of drug abuse has become a major issue, threatening the lives, mental health, and well-being of the younger generation.
Research has shown that factors such as peer group, joblessness, frustration, poverty, broken home, poor socialisation, and access to drugs are the primary motivators for youths to engage in drug abuse. A study conducted in Maiduguri Metropolis revealed that these factors contribute significantly to the increasing rate of substance abuse among young people.

The study also identified the consequences of drug abuse on human health, including physical and mental damage, social problems, and economic burdens.
To tackle this menace, it is essential to address the root causes of drug abuse. Providing alternative livelihoods and opportunities can help distract young people from the allure of substance abuse. Empowering youths through education, skills acquisition, and job creation can help reduce the appeal of drug abuse.
Integrating drug awareness programmes into school curricula can also help educate youths about the dangers of drug abuse.
Moreover, community leaders and stakeholders must join forces to combat drug abuse. Public sensitisation campaigns, community-based initiatives, and support groups for addicts can help create a supportive environment that encourages young people to make informed choices.

The government should also strengthen law enforcement agencies to tackle drug trafficking and provide funding for rehabilitation centres.
Rehabilitation centres should be established to provide support and treatment for addicts. Trained counsellors and healthcare professionals can help individuals overcome addiction and reintegrate into society. Breaking the stigma surrounding drug addiction is crucial in encouraging youths to seek help. We must create a culture that supports and encourages individuals to speak out against substance abuse.
The role of parents and guardians can not be overemphasised in preventing drug abuse among youths. They must take responsibility for monitoring their children’s activities, providing guidance, and fostering open communication.
Parents should also educate their children about the dangers of drug abuse and encourage them to engage in positive extracurricular activities.
Additionally, the government should prioritise youth development programmes, providing resources and support for initiatives that promote skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, and employment. By investing in youth, we can reduce the appeal of substance abuse and create a more productive and responsible citizenry.
Collaboration between government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and community groups is essential in addressing the complex issues surrounding drug abuse.

In conclusion, the growing menace of drug abuse among youths in Maiduguri requires a collective effort to address. By empowering youths, promoting community involvement, and providing government support, we can overcome this challenge and build a brighter future for our younger generation. It is time to take action and ensure that Maiduguri remains a hub of productivity and growth, not a breeding ground for substance abuse.
