Super Eagles Stunned: Goalkeeper Nwabali injured ahead of crucial World Cup qualifiers
The Super Eagles’ preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers have been dealt a significant blow after first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali sustained an injury while playing for his South African club, Chippa United.
The 29-year-old, who has become an indispensable figure for Nigeria, was stretchered off the field in the first half of his team’s league match against Richards Bay on Tuesday.
While the extent of the injury is not yet confirmed, its timing is a serious concern for the Super Eagles, who are just weeks away from crucial back-to-back qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.

Since making his debut, Nwabali has earned 21 caps and has been pivotal in solidifying Nigeria’s defense with his commanding presence, sharp reflexes, and leadership.
His potential absence would be a huge blow for the team, which is currently fourth in its group, trailing leaders South Africa by six points. Victories in the next two games are considered essential for keeping their qualification hopes alive.
Coach Chelle Faces Limited Goalkeeper Options
Nwabali’s injury comes at a particularly difficult time for the Super Eagles. The team is already without Maduka Okoye, who is serving a two-month suspension following a FIFA ban for illegal betting.
This leaves Coach Eric Chelle with limited and inexperienced options, including:
Amas Obasogie, who plays in Tanzania and has yet to make a senior appearance for Nigeria.
Adebayo Adeleye, of Greek side Volos NPS, who has only one cap.
Ebenezer Harcourt, a 15-year-old prodigy who is considered too inexperienced for high-stakes senior qualifiers.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is awaiting Chippa United’s medical report before making an official statement.
The Super Eagles, who are aiming to return to the World Cup after missing out in 2022, know that anything less than a victory in the upcoming fixtures could push them to the brink of elimination.
