Suleiman Mamman Mohammed: A tribute, by Suleiman Dauda
Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un. We woke up on Friday 27th June, 2025 to the devastating and completely heartbroken news of Suleiman Mamman Mohammed passing. It was the least expected outcome, as we spoke with him and his wife on Thursday 26th June sounded reassuring that he was getting much better. But the Maker decided to draw the curtain.
We can’t question Almighty. Allahu a’lam. Besides, every soul shall taste death, Suleiman has just gone the way of all mortals. All his families and loved ones can do now is pray for him and hold on to loving memories.
For an entire week, I struggled to put words to paper not for lack of things to say, but because the weight of over 30 years of friendship with the subject of this tribute made it incredibly difficult. How does one begin to summarize a lifetime of memories, shared dreams, and quiet companionship?
It was not until Malam Hasan Gimba’s poignant piece, “There is Pain Behind That Smile – Just Do Your Bit,” that the emotions found direction. His words reawakened the grief and reminded us of the quiet strength our dear friend carried through his suffering, urging us to speak, to remember, and to honor him.
Born 46 years ago, Suleiman Mamman Mohammed was the embodiment of tolerance, patience, quiet strength, and humility. From our earliest days together in secondary school, it was clear he was exceptionally gifted especially in mathematics, where his brilliance stood out like a guiding star.
Many of us believed he was destined to follow in his father’s footsteps into the medical profession. But life, in its mysterious wisdom, charted a different path for him. His academic sojourn was characterized by rigorous extraordinary sacrifice and uncommon determination I have rarely seen in anyone else.
He began his academic journey at the University of Maiduguri, in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Yet his hunger for knowledge and global excellence propelled him beyond borders, culminating in a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology and Business Information Systems from Middlesex University in Dubai, and a Master’s degree in Computer Science from University Putra Malaysia.
At the time of his passing on Friday, 27th June 2025, Suleiman remained dogged in his pursuit of knowledge, working toward his PhD while serving as an Assistant Lecturer at Yobe State University. His life was a torch of purpose, a journey of relentless growth, tragically extinguished far too soon.

Beyond his academic and professional brilliance, Suleiman was a man of exceptional character. He lived with rare simplicity and sincerity. Gentle in speech and peaceful in conduct, he is extremely calm and contented. Even from his hospital bed, he was composed and offering strength to his parents, families, and friends who visited him.
A devout Muslim and true embodiment of obedience, Suleiman was deeply admired by his aging parents. His love and commitment to his wife and five precious children was inspiring. He raised his children with Islamic values, contentment, and quiet strength. His life reflected the essence of humility, earning him the love and respect of all who knew him.
Suleiman’s painful death, after a prolonged battle with chronic kidney disease, highlights the growing raging burden of renal illness in Yobe State. His loss must serve as a wake-up call for national and international stakeholders particularly research and public health institutions to intensify efforts toward understanding and combating kidney diseases in Yobe.

There is an urgent need for all stakeholders to work with Yobe State government to strengthen early diagnosis systems, enhance nephrology care infrastructure, and invest in community-based awareness and prevention programs.
Government must deepen partnerships, mobilize more external resources, and support life-saving interventions. Suleiman’s suffering and that of many others should not be in vain. Let this moment stir a renewed commitment to protect lives and build a healthier future.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to His Excellency, Governor Mai Mala Buni, for his compassionate and timely support throughout Suleiman’s illness. Your Excellency’s intervention brought critical relief to the family during their darkest hours and reflects the governor’s commitment to the welfare of Yobe State citizens.
In honour of Suleiman and other vulnerable patients, we respectfully urge wealthy individuals to compliment Yobe State Government efforts and consider establishing a KIDNEY CARE TRUST FUND under the Yobe State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency. Such a sustainable mechanism would ensure access to life-saving care for those in need.
As we bid farewell to our dear friend, we turn to Allah (SWT), the Most Merciful, to console and uplift those Suleiman left behind, his elderly parents, devoted wife, siblings, and, most kindheartedly, his five innocent children.
Please take this message: SULEIMAN, we will do everything in our power to live by your example, support your family and tell your children your story to carry on your legacy for as long as they live. May the Almighty Allah grant him eternal rest in Aljannah Firdausi.
