Six rescued as two-storey building collapses in Lagos

Six people, including a trapped individual, were rescued on Wednesday evening after a two-storey building gave way on Modupeola Street, Mangoro, in the Alimosho area of Lagos State.

The structure collapsed at around 6 p.m., causing panic in the neighbourhood, according to information obtained by Punch. The precise cause of the collapse is not yet known.

Lagos State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed the incident via a statement on his Instagram page. He said that operatives of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) and other first responders arrived swiftly.

He announced: “A two-storey building has collapsed at 4, Modupeola Street, Mangoro bus stop, Alimosho, Lagos State,” adding that a probe has been launched into the incident.

According to Omotoso, team members rescued the trapped victim plus five others from the debris. The five who were freed relatively easily were transported to a nearby private hospital for treatment.

The trapped individual, who sustained fractures and bruising, was moved by the Lagos State Ambulance Service to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital’s surgical emergency unit. He was reported to be in stable condition upon arrival.

The injured man is said to be 44 years old and resides at 10, Olabode Street, Alimosho. He has been admitted for further medical attention.

This collapse comes just weeks after a three-storey building on Bornu Street, Ebute Meta, collapsed in an earlier disaster that claimed four lives. The recurrence underscores mounting concern over building safety and enforcement of construction standards.

In recent months, Lagos has seen several structural failures, including a July collapse along Adeniji-Adele Road in the Isale Eko area, from which four people narrowly escaped.

The string of incidents has renewed public calls for stricter oversight, more rigorous enforcement of building codes, and accountability for those who flout regulations.
