Shari’ah court jails businesswoman 9 months for cheating partners
A Shari’ah court in Rigasa, Kaduna, has sentenced businesswoman Maimuna Muhammad to nine months in prison after she pleaded guilty to charges of cheating, breach of trust, and misappropriation of funds.
Presiding judge Malam Muhammad Adamu, who delivered the judgment on Thursday, stated that the sentence would run for three months for each offense. He also offered the option of a ₦7,000 fine per count.
According to prosecutor Insp. Sambo Maigari, the case was brought by two of Muhammad’s business partners.

The court was informed that the defendant regularly collected foodstuffs like rice and beans from one partner on credit, which she would process and sell before repaying. She had a similar arrangement with a second partner for bedsheets and curtains.
Maigari explained that Muhammad later defaulted on her payments, made excuses, and eventually moved from her home in Rigasa to Maraban Jos to avoid her creditors.

The court ordered Muhammad to refund ₦350,000 for the rice and beans to Rabi’atu Muhammad, along with ₦10,000 in compensation for filing the suit.
She was also directed to pay the second complainant ₦162,000 for the bedsheets and curtains, plus another ₦10,000 in compensation.
Judge Adamu emphasised that the ruling was intended to “ensure justice for the complainants and serve as a deterrent against breach of trust in business dealings.”
