Potiskum represents Yobe at North East U-13 Inter-Primary school games
Story from Ibraheem El-Tafseer
Potiskum has proudly represented Yobe State at the North East U-13 Inter-Primary School Games Competition, sponsored by the Zonal Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
The competition usually begins at the zonal level within each state. In Yobe, there are three zones—Zone A, Zone B, and Zone C. Local governments within each zone compete against each other until a winner emerges to advance to the state-level competition.
Chief Coach of primary schools in Potiskum LGA, Idrissa Dahiru, spoke with Neptune Prime about his team’s journey to representing Yobe at the North East regional competition alongside his players.
He explained, “We started by competing at the Zone B level, which includes Potiskum, Fika, Fune, and Nangere. Potiskum defeated all the other LGAs and earned the right to represent the zone at the state-level games.”

At the state level, Damaturu played against Yusufari, with Yusufari emerging victorious. Potiskum also beat Gulani. The final match at the state level was between Potiskum and Yusufari, where Potiskum secured a win, thus earning the honor of representing Yobe at the North East games held in Adamawa in 2025.
Upon arriving in Adamawa, the team went through a screening process, during which six of Coach Idrissa’s players were disqualified for being over the age limit. He then replaced them with players from his volleyball and handball squads.
In the tournament, Potiskum’s first match was against Borno State, which they won convincingly with a score of 3-0. Their second match was against Bauchi State, whose players were found to be overage, leading to an automatic win for Yobe. However, they lost their third match to Gombe State, 4-1. Gombe later faced Adamawa in the final.
Yobe State finished in third place overall. Despite the team not making it to the final, one Yobe player received the “Best Player” award. The team was awarded medals and certificates, and two of its players were selected to represent the North East in the upcoming national-level competition.
Coach Idrissa expressed his gratitude to Yobe State Governor, Hon. Dr. Mai Mala Buni, the Chairman of Potiskum LGA, Alhaji Salisu Mukhtari, SUBEB, and the Education Secretary for their continued support.
