Police rescue stolen child, arrest suspect for defilement

The Anambra State Police Command has made significant progress in its efforts to combat child trafficking and sexual offenses, successfully rescuing a stolen child and arresting another suspect for defilement.

According to a statement from Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Gender Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) rescued a six-year-old child who had been stolen and trafficked to Ondo State.

“Sequel to an intelligence-based investigation into a case of conspiracy, child stealing, and trafficking transferred from Okpoko Police Station to the State CID Gender Unit, operatives swung into action and successfully rescued the 6-year-old victim from an alleged foster parent in Ondo State,” the statement read.

The police confirmed that the child has since been reunited with his mother and that the suspects have been charged in the Children, Sexual, and Gender-Based Violence Court.

In a separate incident on August 13, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu responded to a distress call in the Ebenebe Community regarding the defilement of a 11-year-old girl.

An 18-year-old male, Uchenna Nweke, was arrested after allegedly forcing his way into a bathroom where the victim was bathing and sexually assaulting her.

“Preliminary findings revealed that the suspect allegedly forced his way into the bathroom where the victim was bathing.

Further revelations from the medical report confirmed the suspect’s culpability,” Ikenga stated. The case is scheduled to be charged in court on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc MNIPS PhD, assured the public that the command is committed to protecting vulnerable groups.

“The Command’s unwavering commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons remains non-negotiable. Offenders of such heinous crimes will face the full weight of the law,” he warned.
