Police intercept scrap shipment with military-grade bombs

Story by Susan Mbamah

The Kaduna State Police Command has successfully intercepted a shipment of scrap metal from Borno State, a region grappling with persistent insurgency, and discovered military-grade bombs and a cache of ammunition hidden within.

The explosives and arms were found at a scavenger company in the Kudandan Industrial Area of Kaduna South on August 2, 2025.

According to DSP Mansir Hassan, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, police acted on a tip about suspicious items at the facility. A specialised Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was dispatched to the scene.

“Upon arrival, the EOD experts conducted a meticulous inspection and confirmed that the items in question were unexploded ordnance (UXOs), military-grade bombs that had not yet detonated,” said Hassan in a statement. The team safely removed the explosives for controlled demolition at a secure location.

In addition to the bombs, officers also recovered a locally made revolver pistol loaded with six rounds, 15 rounds of 7.2mm live ammunition, three live cartridges, and other assorted ammunition.

Kaduna’s Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, has since ordered the facility to be sealed to allow for a thorough search and ensure no other devices are present. He also issued a stern warning to all scavenger businesses and metal depots in the state.

“All scavenger companies and depots in the state must stop receiving consignments from conflict regions, especially the North-East,” CP Muhammad stated. He ordered Area Commanders and DPOs to enforce compliance and arrest violators.

The discovery has raised significant security concerns about the unregulated movement of materials from volatile zones into more stable areas.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the origin and intent behind the shipment. While no arrests have been announced, authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the materials were intended for sabotage or terrorism.

CP Muhammad reiterated the police’s commitment to public safety, urging residents to stay vigilant and report suspicious activity. “Our top priority is the safety and security of every resident.

We urge citizens to support our work with timely and credible information,” he said.
