Police inspector, 3 accomplices arrested for robbery, extortion

Police in Edo State have arrested a serving police inspector and three civilians on charges of armed robbery, brutality, and extortion.
The arrests followed a viral video in which a victim claimed officers had abducted him, stolen his belongings, and harassed him.
According to a statement released on Sunday by police spokesman Moses Yamu, Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika ordered a quick investigation after the video surfaced. This led to the interception of the suspects on August 15.
“On 15th August 2025, operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team successfully intercepted the suspects with a silver coloured Toyota Yaris and other incriminating items,” Yamu stated.

He confirmed that the police inspector and his three civilian accomplices were linked to a pattern of extortion and harassment against city residents.
Commissioner Agbonika condemned the “shameful and criminal” behavior and promised that the suspects would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
“The command has zero tolerance for corruption, abuse of office, or misconduct within the Force. There will be no hiding place for rogue elements within the police. Any officer caught engaging in extortion, brutality, or corruption will be dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted,” he said.

Yamu urged the public, including the victim from the video, to provide any information that could assist in the investigation.
He concluded by restating the command’s commitment to protecting citizens, rebuilding public trust, and upholding the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
