Police arrest medical doctor, 2 others for stealing, selling children
The Anambra State Police Command has arraigned a 72-year-old doctor, Daniel Ikebuilo, and two women, Ifunanya Ogbonna (24) and Odinaka Okorie (27), for allegedly stealing and selling children.
The defendants appeared before the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Offences Court in Awka, facing serious charges including conspiracy, child stealing, and illegal child trafficking.
The prosecutor, Chinyere Okechukwu, a police inspector, explained that the accused committed the crimes between July 2024 and February 2025 in Nkwelle-Ezunaka, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra.
Okechukwu stated that the defendants conspired to steal two children—one aged six and the other five—against their parents’ wishes.
The doctor is accused of selling the six-year-old child for ₦3 million, while the other two defendants sold the five-year-old for ₦1.2 million.
The charges brought against the trio contravene Sections 495(a) and 321 of the Criminal Code of Anambra, as well as Section 31(1)(4) of the Child Rights Law 2004.
Chief Magistrate U.E. Onochie granted each defendant bail of ₦1 million, with a surety in a similar sum. The court adjourned the case until May 7 for hearing.
