Police accused of breaking Sowore’s arm during detention assault
Omoyele Sowore, a prominent activist and politician, claims he was assaulted by police officers while in a detention cell at the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja on Thursday morning.
The alleged assault, which he said broke his arm, was detailed in posts on his verified Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) accounts.
According to Sowore, a team from the IGP Monitoring Unit, led by a deputy commissioner of police, Akin Fakorede, forcibly entered his cell.
“This morning at about 6 AM, a police team led by a Chief Superintendent of Police from the IGP Monitoring unit forcibly gained entry into Omoyele Sowore’s cell at the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja claiming they were taking him to court,” the post stated.

The post further explained that when Sowore asked to see the charges and notify his lawyers, “the team of nine officers, including eight heavily armed personnel, handled Sowore roughly…breaking his arm in the process, before taking him to another police facility.”
Sowore’s legal team and associates have not been informed of his current location. The force spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, has not responded to requests for comment on the situation.
The detention began on Wednesday after Sowore honored a police invitation regarding allegations of forgery and inciting disturbance. He arrived at the FID with supporters who briefly protested outside. During interrogation, Sowore refused to write a statement, demanding that the police produce the original memo he was accused of forging.

“The police were trying to compel him to submit a statement without presenting the original document he allegedly forged,” said his lawyer, Abdulkareem Musa. “That is a clear abuse of procedure. No accused person is obliged to write a statement without seeing the evidence against them.”
This invitation from the police came just two weeks after Sowore participated in a protest by retired police officers who were demanding better welfare and removal from the Contributory Pension Scheme.
During that protest, Sowore accused a police cameraman of stealing his smart glasses and formally reported the alleged theft to the Asokoro Police Division.
