On Yobe’s January 29–31, 2025 Lake Chad Basin governors’ forum at the Indimi International Conference Centre in Maiduguri, by Abubakar M. Kareto
Certainly, next week, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State will be hosting not one but two additional Nigerian state governors, as well as a regional governor from the Niger Republic, two regional governors from Cameroon, and two more from Chad.
Governors from nations in the Lake Chad region will gather at this summit, which is being coordinated by the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) in collaboration with the African Union Commission (AUC) and the UNDP, to talk about climate change, development, and security.
In addition to the host, Governor Buni, the governors of Borno and Adamawa States in Nigeria, Diffa region in the Niger Republic, Lac and Hadjer-Lamis Provinces in Chad, and the Far North and North Regions of Cameroon attend the summit. The Convocation’s theme is Revitalising the Lake Chad Basin: Strengthening Achievements, Dedication to Harmony, International Collaboration, Safety, and Long-Term Planning for an Adaptive Society.
It is clear that Governor Buni is dedicated to regional collaboration and sustainable development in the Lake Chad Basin area, as Yobe State has been chosen to host this important event.
With the theme being “Rebuilding the Lake Chad Basin: Consolidating Gains, Commitment to Peace, Cross-Border Cooperation, Security, and Sustainable Development for a Resilient Community,” the event promises to be enlightening and impactful.
It is expected that the forum will assemble roughly 500 experts, ranging from practitioners to academics, encompassing representatives from the governments of Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, in addition to Regional Economic Communities, NGOs, CSOs, traditional leaders, UN agencies, donors, and technical partners.
While we wait for the 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum to begin, it will undoubtedly provide a crucial chance to put into motion policies for cooperation, climate resilience, food security, human capital development, and peacebuilding. These initiatives can strengthen gains, provide hope for a resilient and rich future in the Lake Chad Basin, and address present needs while also establishing a framework for future success.
I hope that the Lake Chad Region’s top officials have productive discussions on pressing issues and that the results of such discussions are quickly put into action.
