Northern APC: Could it be the stockholm syndrome? – A rejoinder, by Engr. Bello Gwarzo Abdullahi, FNSE
Babayola M. Toungo’s incisive analysis, titled “Northern APC: Could it be the Stockholm Syndrome?”published in the Daily Trust on May 26, 2025, meticulously navigates the intricate political landscape of Nigeria. The author adeptly dissects the convoluted dynamics entrenched within the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the allegorical captivity of the Nigerian populace, particularly in the northern region. This metaphorical portrayal of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC as captors demanding unwavering loyalty in exchange for political aspirations illuminates the disconnection and neglect experienced by a significant segment of the citizenry.
The recent decisions and maneuvers of the Northern APC have ignited fervent debates and discussions among political analysts and the broader public. A manifestation of Stockholm syndrome appears to be present within the party. This psychological phenomenon, wherein hostages develop an affinity for their captors, serves as a poignant analogy to underscore the alignment of the Northern APC with interests that may not genuinely prioritize the welfare of the constituents they ostensibly represent.
The surge in kidnappings and assaults perpetrated by bandits in the North West region has instilled profound fear and despair within communities, leading to the fracturing of families and the obliteration of livelihoods.
The absence of adequate security measures and timely government intervention has exacerbated the crisis, leaving citizens feeling forsaken and vulnerable. This dire scenario accentuates the failure of APC leadership in the North to prioritize the welfare of their constituents over personal ambitions and political allegiances.
Moreover, the conspicuous dearth of fundamental infrastructure in numerous northern communities—such as healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and transportation networks—reveals a skewed allocation of resources favoring political gain rather than community development. This disparity exacerbates the chasm between the ruling elite and the marginalized populace, perpetuating a cycle of neglect and disenfranchisement.
The orchestrated endorsements and confidence votes for Tinubu’s candidacy within the APC cultivate a culture of sycophancy among officials, further alienating the ordinary citizenry. The suppression of dissenting voices by political elites undermines the democratic process and erodes public trust, setting the stage for potential electoral ramifications. A potential erosion of trust in the APC within the northern region serves as a clear harbinger of what may transpire in 2027, as disillusioned voters may gravitate towards opposition parties that address their grievances, posing a formidable challenge to the ruling party’s preeminence. Such a metamorphosis could have far-reaching implications. This has already commenced with the ongoing initiatives to form coalitions aimed at challenging the ruling party.
The northern region’s voter demographic wields considerable influence over electoral outcomes and policy decisions at the national level. Any shifts in allegiance or voting behavior in this pivotal region could reshape Nigeria’s political dynamics, thereby influencing governance and developmental initiatives.
The economic adversities and intercommunal conflicts in the North have exacerbated poverty levels, obstructing educational advancement, prompting urban migration, and stymieing regional progress. Neglecting to address these pressing issues could incite protests, social unrest, and security challenges, perpetuating instability.
Efforts to alleviate poverty, engage in dialogue among conflicting factions, and invest in education and employment opportunities are imperative for achieving enduring stability and prosperity in the northern region. Political leaders must heed the admonitions raised by Babayola M. Toungo and take decisive action to rectify systemic injustices before it is too late. The concerns surrounding the Northern APC’s actions are legitimate and merit thorough examination.
It is essential for political entities to prioritize the interests of the populace to regain their trust and support. Only by upholding core values can political parties secure the allegiance of the electorate.
