No Work, No Pay: A costly mistake for the Tinubu administration, by Dr Tukur Madu Yemi

The Federal Government’s plan to enforce “No Work, No Pay” against the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is a costly mistake that could worsen the crisis in Nigeria’s universities. Laws alone cannot fix deep-rooted problems in the education sector. What the nation needs now is wisdom, patience, and sincere dialogue, not threats.

University lecturers are not ordinary workers; they are nation-builders who train future leaders and drive innovation. Treating them with hostility instead of respect destroys morale and weakens trust.

Yes, the government has made some progress, reconstituting governing councils and promising reforms, yet tension remains because trust is still fragile. The right step is to rebuild that trust, not erode it further with “No Work, No Pay.”

Rather than issuing threats, the government should swiftly pay all outstanding allowances and address grievances before any strike begins. Paying what is owed is not weakness but wisdom — a sign of leadership that values peace over pride. Such action will calm tensions and prevent another shutdown.

Every strike disrupts academic calendars, frustrates students, and damages Nigeria’s image. We cannot afford another setback. President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda must reflect genuine hope, especially in education.

This is the time for dialogue, not confrontation. If wisdom guides policy, peace will follow. But if pride takes over, the nation will pay the price.
