Niger State tanker explosion claims 86 lives, injures 55

A tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State has claimed the lives of 86 people and injured 55 others.

The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba Arah, confirmed on Sunday that “eighty victims were buried in a mass grave at the Dikko Primary Health Care premises.”

He further stated, “Five bodies were claimed by relatives for private burial, and one victim died while receiving treatment at the healthcare centre.”

The tragic incident occurred when a fuel tanker, travelling from Kaduna to Gwagwalada, overturned, spilling its contents. Despite repeated warnings to stay away, residents gathered to scoop fuel, leading to a catastrophic explosion.

The mass burial, conducted in collaboration with Gurara local government officials and volunteers, began at 5 p.m. and lasted until midnight.

Arah also revealed that the explosion caused extensive destruction, including the loss of properties worth millions of naira.

Those injured in the incident are currently receiving medical attention.
