The North East Development Commission (NEDC) commissioned and handed over the newly constructed Ari Kime Mega School to the Yobe State Government on Tuesday.

Located in Potiskum Local Government Area, the facility aims to decongest the original Ari Kime Primary School, West Africa’s largest primary institution with over 18,000 pupils attending in three daily shifts.

The inaugurated structure comprises four two-storey blocks housing 24 classrooms, 8 stores, and 32 toilets, while the junior secondary section has two dedicated 2-storey buildings.

Others are an administrative section with one block, 7 offices, 1 store, and 6 toilets; two units of two-bedroom staff quarters; a commercial centre (4 shops + 2 toilets); and perimeter fencing with a gatehouse.

Also within the fully-equipped structure is an emergency room, resting room, two wards, a pharmacy, and two toilets.

Others are utilities such as a generator set, power transformer, electric borehole, overhead/groundwater tanks in a powerhouse, and solar streetlights.

During the handover, Hon. Abu Maigari Ahmadu, Minister for Regional Development, led a delegation alongside NEDC management and National Assembly committee members.

Governor Mai Mala Buni, represented by SSG Alhaji Baba Mallam Wali, formally received the facility on behalf of the state government.

The NEDC Director of Finance and Administration, Dr Abubakar Garba, highlighted the school’s critical role: “Our assessment 2-3 years ago revealed severe overcrowding forcing three daily shifts. The board immediately approved this project to decongest the institution.”

He handed over operational documents to the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), whose representatives attended the event.

The mega school is projected to accommodate excess pupils from the original facility, enabling optimised learning schedules and improved educational outcomes.
