Mohamed Salah slams Liverpool fan page for ‘disrespectful’ post targeting Núñez, Díaz

Story by Susan Mbamah

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has publicly criticized a popular fan page for a “disrespectful” post aimed at his former teammates, Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz, both of whom left the club this summer.

The Egyptian winger, widely considered one of Liverpool’s greatest players, took to X (formerly Twitter) to call out the independent account @AnfieldEdition after it shared a side-by-side photo collage.

The post compared the club’s new record-breaking signings to the departed forwards, featuring black-and-white photos of Núñez and Díaz next to colored images of new arrivals Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. The post suggested that the new players were an upgrade.

Salah, known for defending his teammates, past and present, called the comparison “unfair and needless.” He added that both players “gave everything in red” and “deserve respect.”

This controversy comes at the end of a record-breaking summer transfer window for Liverpool. According to Sky Sports, the club spent £446 million, the most ever by a Premier League team in a single window, surpassing Chelsea’s 2023 record of £434.5 million.

Key arrivals included Florian Wirtz (£116m, from Bayer Leverkusen), Alexander Isak (£125m, from Newcastle United, a new British transfer record), Hugo Ekitike (£79m), Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5m), Milos Kerkez (£40m), and Giorgi Mamardashvili (£29m). The club also made a late attempt to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace for £35m, but the deal fell through on deadline day.

Despite these significant acquisitions, Liverpool also recouped a large amount of money, generating £228.1m from player sales. Among the departures were Núñez and Díaz, who both had mixed spells at Anfield.

Darwin Núñez, a former club-record signing at £64m (potentially rising to £85m) from Benfica in 2022, joined Al-Hilal for approximately £46m after three inconsistent seasons marked by flashes of brilliance and missed opportunities.

Luis Díaz, on the other hand, was sold to Bayern Munich for £65.5m after becoming a key attacking player, often used as a false nine under new manager Arne Slot.

Their exits, along with the tragic loss of Diogo Jota in a car crash and the surprise departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid, marked a period of significant transition for the club.

Salah’s defense of his former teammates has resonated with many Liverpool fans who felt the post crossed the line from critical analysis into disrespect.

One supporter responded to Salah’s post, saying, “This is why you’re our captain, Mo. You protect the boys whether they’re here or gone.”

Another added, “Núñez and Díaz might not have been perfect, but they gave us big moments. They don’t deserve to be mocked.”
