Man drags daughter’s boyfriend to court over alleged ₦13m theft of death benefits

A dispute over death benefits has landed in a Customary Court in Kaduna, where a man is accusing his daughter’s boyfriend of misappropriating funds.

Mr. Ishaku Joseph has filed a case against Yunana Zock, the boyfriend of his daughter, Emmanuella, alleging that Zock illegally took ₦13 million paid out following the death of Joseph’s wife.

According to Prosecutor ASP Jeremiah Amfani, the money was transferred to Emmanuella in 2023, as she was listed as the next of kin. Amfani claims that Zock “deceived her and withdrew the funds without consent.”

Testifying in court, Emmanuella supported her father’s claim, stating that her boyfriend “took her ATM card without her knowledge and withdrew the money.”

Zock, however, pleaded not guilty. He stated that the ₦11.9 million was transferred to Emmanuella’s account with her knowledge. He claimed she had agreed to give him ₦2 million to start a business and added that they shared ATM PINs while living together in Abuja.

Zock presented an Opay account statement as evidence, which the court accepted as an exhibit. He also informed the court that he would call a witness at the next hearing.

Presiding Judge, Ms. Patience Musa, has adjourned the case until September 30 for the continuation of the defense.
