Leather: Blending timeless edge with modern fashion
Story by Susan Mbamah
For years, leather was seen as a seasonal choice reserved mainly for chilly autumns and frosty winters. But in recent times, leather has broken free from that box and redefined itself as a year-round fashion staple.
From breezy summer skirts to sleek spring jackets, leather has transitioned from a purely functional fabric into a symbol of bold style.
Obtained from the tanning, or chemical treatment, of animal skins and hides to prevent decay, leather is very strong, flexible and durable.
The most common leathers come from cattle, sheep, goats, equine animals, buffalo, pigs and hogs, ostriches, and aquatic animals such as seals and alligators.
For example, Kangaroo leather is used to make items that must be strong and flexible. It is the material most commonly used in bullwhips.
Some motorcyclists favour kangaroo leather for motorcycle seats because of its light weight and abrasion resistance. Kangaroo leather is also used for falconry jesses, soccer footwear (e.g. Adidas Copa Mundial and boxing speed bags.

From Utility to Luxury
Leather began as a material of necessity crafted into boots, jackets, and gear to protect against harsh conditions. Over time, it became associated with rebellion (think biker jackets and punk culture), and later with luxury fashion houses turning it into an emblem of sophistication.
Reinventing for All Seasons
Advancements in tanning and design have given rise to lighter, softer, and more breathable leathers. Designers now craft leather shorts, crop tops, and even sleeveless dresses perfect for summer wear, proving the material isn’t confined to cold weather anymore.
Versatility Across Styles
From edgy streetwear to minimalist chic, leather adapts effortlessly. A classic black leather jacket remains timeless, while colourful leather trousers or pastel-hued skirts keep it fresh and seasonally relevant.
Celebrities & Runway Influence
Fashion icons like Rihanna, Zendaya, and Kanye West have showcased leather year-round, influencing how everyday wearers embrace the fabric.
Fashion weeks from Milan to New York consistently spotlight leather in both spring/summer and fall/winter collections.

Sustainability & the New Leather
With sustainability concerns rising, brands are exploring vegan leather alternatives made from pineapple fibres, mushrooms, and recycled plastics. This has allowed leather’s year-round dominance to continue without compromising eco-conscious values.
Final Stitch
Leather has shifted from a cold-weather essential to a 365-day statement piece. Whether it’s a lightweight summer mini dress or a heavy winter trench, leather proves its timeless adaptability, making it one of the most powerful materials in fashion history.
Critics of tanneries claim that they engage in unsustainable practices that pose health hazards to people and the environment near them.
