Lakurawa Bandits in Bunza: A wake-up call for Kebbi and Nigeria, by Hassan Ahmad
On Friday afternoon, Lakurawa, a notorious group of foreign bandits, reportedly struck Bunza Local Government Headquarters in Kebbi State. This chilling incident is not just another line in Nigeria’s growing insecurity ledger—it is a loud, painful reminder that our house is on fire while our leaders argue over furniture.
While politicians and power brokers across Kebbi and beyond bicker, plot, and trade blame, the very soil of our communities is being violated by marauders. The men, women, and children of Bunza are not interested in political quarrels or personal ambitions; they want security, livelihoods, and dignity. Each attack chips away at public trust, deepens poverty, and undermines socio-economic stability.
This crisis exposes a dangerous gap: a government distracted by political self-interest while its people are left vulnerable. Insecurity and poverty are not abstract statistics—they are the reasons farmers abandon their fields, businesses close their shops, and families flee ancestral homes. If we continue like this, our region risks losing not just its stability but its future.

What Kebbi State and Nigeria need now is not political drama but decisive action:
1. Unified Security Strategy: Kebbi’s leadership must urgently coordinate with federal forces, traditional rulers, and local vigilantes to secure vulnerable communities like Bunza.
2. Investment in Empowerment: Banditry thrives where poverty festers. A serious empowerment programme—jobs, skills, and small business support—must accompany any security effort.

3. Leadership Responsibility: Politicians must set aside petty rivalries. Leadership is about service, not ego. Our leaders should be in Bunza, standing with the people, not in Abuja or Birnin Kebbi plotting their next political moves.
History will not remember the excuses of our politicians; it will remember their failure—or their courage—to defend their people. The people of Bunza deserve better. Kebbi deserves better. Nigeria deserves better.
