Killings: IGP warns Plateau residents against ethnic profiling as police make no arrest

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has urged residents of Plateau State to refrain from ethnic profiling of criminal elements, following a wave of deadly attacks in the region.

During a visit to Bassa Local Government Area on Tuesday where over 50 people were killed in a recent attack on Zikke community, Egbetokun condemned the violence and promised swift justice against the perpetrators.

“This criminal element will soon be surprised. Their days are numbered,” he said.

The attack, which left homes razed and thousands displaced, came just two weeks after a similar incident in neighbouring Bokkos LGA, where dozens also lost their lives.

Egbetokun’s visit makes it the third time he will be in Plateau state in recent months, underscoring the security challenges facing the region.

The police chief warned against attributing criminality to specific ethnic groups, saying such profiling risks further inflaming tensions in the already volatile area.

“Criminals must be dealt with as criminals. They don’t have tribes,” he stated.

“Let us work together to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice, not based on ethnicity, but on their actions.”

Governor Caleb Mutfwang, reacting to the latest killings, vowed that those behind the bloodshed would face justice.

“To the killers and their sponsors, know this: your evil shall not go unpunished. You may run, but you will not hide,” he said in a statement.

“Plateau will not fall. Plateau will stand tall,” the governor added.

However, no arrests have yet been confirmed in connection with the latest incident, though security forces have increased their presence in the affected communities.
