Katsina to vaccinate 4.8 million children against rubella during October campaign

Katsina State is preparing to vaccinate approximately 4.8 million children aged between nine months and 14 years against rubella, as part of its upcoming integrated health campaign.

The exercise will run from 6 to 13 October 2025, coinciding with a polio vaccination campaign, the state government and UNICEF announced on 23 September.

Katsina has been allocated 3,698,500 doses of the novel oral polio vaccine (nOPV2), targeting 2.3 million children under five, which will be distributed via Directly Observed Oral Polio Vaccination (DOOPV).

To support the mobilisation, a total of 2,253 teams will be deployed across the state using fixed posts and temporary sites during the campaign period.

In addition, 5,584 teams will carry out routine immunisation services between 6 and 10 October. Among them, 3,761 teams will visit households, 993 will operate at transit or special points, and 830 will serve via fixed posts.

UNICEF’s Kano Field Office head, Rahama Farah, said that 3,300 health workers have been trained, along with 600 Non-Compliance Resolution Teams (NCRTs), to address resistance or hesitancy during the campaign.

The drive will also include 200 NCRTs comprising a local leader, community chief and vaccinator, operating in real time to address non-compliance issues.

Katsina State has engaged six state facilitators, 21 local government facilitators, 462 voluntary ward supervisors and 4,647 community mobilisers to support awareness and implementation.

The integrated campaign in Nigeria will see measles-rubella vaccination paired with polio immunisation across all 36 states in two phases, from 6 October 2025 through to 13 February 2026.
