Kano court remands orphanage owner over alleged kidnapping, child trafficking

A Kano State High Court has ordered the remand of Mr. Ogugua Christopher, owner of Asaba Orphanage Home, in a correctional facility over allegations of kidnapping and child trafficking.

Christopher, alongside two others — Hauwa Abubakar and Nkechi Odlyne — faces a 15-count charge bordering on conspiracy and kidnapping, in violation of the Kano State Penal Code and the Children and Young Persons Law.

Prosecutors allege the defendants conspired between June 2016 and December 2021 to abduct children from Kano and sell them in Delta State.

At Tuesday’s hearing, the prosecution, led by Solicitor-General Salisu Muhammad-Tahir, requested Christopher’s remand, noting the absence of two co-defendants. The defence, however, sought his detention in NAPTIP custody.

Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu ordered Christopher’s remand in a correctional centre and directed NAPTIP to produce the others at the next sitting, adjourned to October 27.

The case originated from a 2022 petition by PATAMOC to NAPTIP over the alleged disappearance of more than 600 Kano children since 2010, with only eight rescued so far.
