Kano censorship board bans Kauyawa day events

Story from Shafaatu DAUDA Kano

The Executive Secretary of the board, Abba El-Mustapha, made the announcement on Saturday following a management meeting held at the board’s headquarters in Kano.

The decision, he said, was in line with an amended law recently passed by the Kano State House of Assembly and signed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

“With immediate effect, organizing any event under the name of Kauyawa Day is now considered an offense under the new law,” El-Mustapha declared.

He explained that the updated law empowers the board to regulate and monitor all event centres and activities involving DJs across the state. As such, the suspension affects all venues hosting public events until further notice.

The move comes amid growing concerns from religious and cultural institutions over the nature of Kauyawa Day celebrations.

These events, often organized by youths and local community groups, have recently faced backlash for allegedly encouraging behavior deemed inappropriate by some segments of the society.

In reinforcing the new measures, El-Mustapha called on community leaders and security agencies to assist in ensuring compliance.

“We urge traditional leaders, security operatives, Hisbah, vigilante groups, and neighborhood watch teams to work closely with us in enforcing this directive,” he said.
