KACRAN lauds Potiskum LG Chairman for exemplary leadership in conflict resolution

The Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN), a registered organisation dedicated to ending farmer-herder conflicts, on Sunday, issued a statement expressing profound appreciation for the exemplary leadership of the Potiskum Local Government Chairman, Honourable Muktari Salisu.

In a press release signed by KACRAN President Khalil Moh’d Bello, the organization credits Chairman Muktari’s proactive and democratic approach for fostering peace and preventing conflict in the region.

KACRAN’s mission is to promote peaceful coexistence by advocating for the reclamation of grazing reserves, opening of cattle routes, and the development of livestock infrastructure.

The association also urges both herders and farmers to respect one another’s land and livelihoods and supports government and individual efforts that benefit pastoral communities.

A Proven Commitment to Peace and Development

Chairman Muktari’s actions have consistently demonstrated his commitment to these goals. Last year, in response to an order from Yobe State Governor Dr. Mai Mala Buni, CON, Chairman Muktari was among the first local government leaders to establish a committee tasked with protecting grazing reserves and cattle routes.

This committee, which included representatives from farmers, herders, traditional rulers, and security operatives, successfully prevented any conflicts between farmers and herders throughout the year.

“Honorable Muktari Salisu has proven to be a genuine and proactive leader who listens attentively to his constituents,” said Honourable Khalil Mohd Bello, National President of KACRAN. “His swift action in forming the committee and providing it with the necessary support was instrumental in maintaining peace.”

Responsive Leadership and Community Engagement

KACRAN highlighted several other instances of Chairman Muktari’s responsiveness:

Road Maintenance and Cattle Routes: In late 2023, after KACRAN brought a complaint regarding a road construction company that had converted a national cattle route into a borrow pit, Chairman Muktari promptly released adequate funds to his Department of Works to have the route refilled. The work was completed successfully, restoring a vital pathway for herders.

Land Disputes: In early 2024, KACRAN wrote to the Chairman regarding a land dispute involving its members in Gamawayel Village. The Chairman and his staff successfully resolved the issue amicably, preventing potential escalation.

Inclusivity in Governance: When a local committee was formed to visit cattle routes without KACRAN’s representation, Chairman Muktari listened to the association’s concerns, and a new exercise was conducted to ensure their inclusion. This action solidified KACRAN’s trust in the Chairman’s commitment to democratic principles.

Investment in Community Infrastructure

Chairman Muktari’s dedication extends beyond conflict resolution. He has fulfilled a promise to the pastoral community by constructing a solar-powered borehole for the benefit of Herders Community in Gamawayel and other areas. This initiative provides a crucial water source for both people and livestock, directly addressing a key need of the community.

“Chairman Muktari is a leader who respects the rule of law and holds his people in high esteem,” added Bello. “He is transparent, committed, and works tirelessly to maintain peace, boost the economy, and improve the well-being of his people, aligning perfectly with Governor Buni’s people-oriented policies.”

KACRAN also extends its gratitude to the management staff of the Potiskum Local Government Council for their unwavering support and cooperation.

A Call to Action for Other Leaders

In conclusion, KACRAN urges all 17 Executive Local Government Chairmen in Yobe State to emulate the exemplary leadership of Honorable Muktari Salisu. By prioritising diplomacy and proactively addressing community needs, these leaders can contribute to the state’s transformation, job creation, and youth and women empowerment, as envisioned by Governor Buni.
