Jigawa State Floods: Heavy rains destroy homes, displace families

Heavy rainfall in the Malam Madori Local Government Area of Jigawa State has destroyed at least 70 houses, damaging dozens more and displacing many families.
The downpour, which began late Saturday and continued into Sunday morning, submerged communities including Tonikutara, Gandun Sarki, Gandun Bundugoma, and Shagari Quarters.
Floodwaters overwhelmed culverts and waterways, forcing residents to flee their homes.
Dan-Ummah Abba, a resident of Gandun Sarki, said his house was one of more than 30 destroyed in his community alone and called on the state government for urgent relief. Bulama Jamilu, a community leader, confirmed that most of the displaced families are currently staying with relatives.
The Chairman of Malam Madori LGA, Salisu Sani Garun-Gabas, expressed his sympathy to the victims and directed the local emergency committee to assess the damage.

The committee’s Vice Chairman, Amina Haruna Dokajo, stated that the area’s lawmaker, Hamza Adamu Babayaro, had donated truckloads of soil and other relief items to help the affected households. She also mentioned plans to install a water pump in Gandun Sarki to divert floodwaters.
A state government delegation, led by the Senior Special Adviser on Flood, Hamza Muhammad Hadejia, has since visited the affected communities. Hadejia assured residents of “immediate intervention to mitigate the impact and prevent future disasters.”
