Islamic cleric sentenced to prison for ₦2.2m fraud against woman

An Ogun State Magistrates Court in Ota has jailed 38-year-old Islamic cleric Azeez Aboderin for two years for fraudulently obtaining ₦2.2 million from a woman under false pretenses.

The Islamic cleric had earlier pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of fraud and obtaining money under false pretence.

Delivering judgement on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, the Magistrate, O.O. Fadairo, sentenced Aboderin to two years imprisonment with an option of ₦200,000 fine.

Fadairo also asked the Islamic cleric to restitute ₦2.2 million to the complainant, Oyeniyi Mariam.

She added that the prosecution counsel, ASP E.O. Adaraloye, proved beyond reasonable doubt that Aboderin was guilty of the charge brought against him.

Earlier, Adaraloye told the court that the Muslim prophet committed the offences at Iyana-Iyesi area in Ota between January and July 2025.

He said the convict fraudulently collected the sum under false pretence from the complainant to assist her on an undisclosed problem.

He added that the Islamic cleric converted the money to personal use instead of doing what the complainant asked him to do for her.

Adaraloye said the offences contravened Section 390 and 419 of the Criminal Code, Law of Ogun, 2006.
