Iran executes man convicted of spying for Israel, leaking nuclear secrets

Story by Susan Mbamah

Iranian authorities have executed a man convicted of spying for Israel, the judiciary announced on Wednesday. The man was accused of providing information about a nuclear scientist who was killed during the 12-day war with Israel in June.

The judiciary’s Mizan Online website identified the man as Roozbeh Vadi. “Roozbeh Vadi was executed following judicial proceedings and confirmation of his sentence by the Supreme Court,” the statement read, adding that he had leaked information about a “nuclear scientist who was assassinated during the Zionist regime’s recent aggression.”

The execution was carried out by hanging. The report did not specify when Vadi was arrested or sentenced.

According to Mizan, Vadi was recruited online by Israel’s spy agency, Mossad, and “transferred classified information.”

In mid-June, Israel launched a bombing campaign against Iran, which led to a war where Iran retaliated with missile and drone strikes. The Israeli offensive resulted in the deaths of senior military commanders, nuclear scientists, and hundreds of others. At least a dozen nuclear scientists were killed, according to local media reports.

Since the conflict, Iran has vowed to conduct swift trials for anyone suspected of collaborating with Israel. Authorities have since announced multiple arrests of alleged spies for Israel and have executed several people convicted of working with Mossad.

According to human rights groups like Amnesty International, Iran is the second-most prolific executioner in the world, after China.
