I never promised to step down for anyone — Atiku

Atiku Abubakar has denied reports that he pledged to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race in favour of a younger contender.

His spokesperson, Paul Ibe, issued a statement clarifying that the former vice-president’s remarks were misrepresented by parts of the media.

Ibe said that after reviewing both the video and transcript of Atiku’s interview with BBC Hausa, it was clear he never explicitly stated, suggested or implied any intention to step aside for anyone.

He emphasised that Atiku only said that young people and other aspirants should feel free to enter the presidential contest.

Ibe also noted that Atiku expressed willingness to support a younger candidate should one emerge through a fair primary process.

The statement called on media outlets to avoid stretching interpretation to “the point of mischief,” arguing that such distortions do not reflect what was actually said.

For the record, Ibe said, the insinuations that Atiku would step down are inaccurate and contrary to the former vice-president’s intentions.

According to the clarification, during the interview, Atiku encouraged youth participation but stopped short of conceding his own candidacy.

Earlier reports stated that Atiku might abandon his ambition in favour of a younger candidate, quoting parts of the BBC Hausa interview.
