How notorious Biafran leader abducted, killed female lieutenant for joining Nigerian Army

Story by Jessica Mbamah

Late Lieutenant Phoebe Pleasant Johnson’s dad is from Isikwato local government in Abia State while her mom is from Okigwe in Imo State.

She passed out from the Nigerian Defence Academy in December 2022.

Immediately after her passing out parade in November, she visited her grandmother, with whom she shares a strong bond, in Okigwe in Imo State to spend Christmas and the New Year.

Her mom was careful not to tell people about her joining the Nigerian military because there was growing insecurity fuelled by anti-separatist or Biafra agitators who considered Nigerian security forces as enemies.

But her mother’s sister, an aunt who runs a beer parlour in Okigwe, was too excited and kept telling everyone about her niece who is now in the army as a lieutenant.

Even though Phoebe was careful not to wear anything about the military while in the village or tell anyone, her aunt’s words spread fast, and on December 31st, some unknown assailants visited their home at night on bikes and beat her grandmother, who tried to prevent them from taking her away.

They forcefully took the young lieutenant away, but her aunt, Chiwendu, got on her ladies’ bike and chased after them.

Her aunt hasn’t been found to this day.

But for Lieutenant Phoebe, the military launched an extensive manhunt for her, raiding some Biafran liberation army camps across the state.

Soon afterwards, “Major General” Gentle the yahoo, the late commander of the Biafra liberation forces, released a video where she was naked with blood coming out of her nose and looking severely malnourished and tortured.

He made a statement warning all Igbo people in the military or police and all Nigerian security agencies to resign, and no Igbo person should enlist in it or they’ll be killed. He immediately turned and gave an order for one of his men to behead the lieutenant.

Her hands were bound and she was beheaded on recorded video.

Rest in peace, Lieutenant P.P. Johnson.
