Hauwa and her transdisciplinary approach to scholarship, by Kenny Ola

Until you meet her, you won’t be out of the oblivion that there isn’t truly a futuristic northern woman who combines marriage, motherhood and scholarship with remarkable success. She sees scholarship not as survival, but a trailblazing move to tell the whole world that marriage and motherhood are never hindrances to fulfilment but are required necessities that do not merely add colour to life but reinforce the strength of any woman who dare stand tall amidst those necessities.

From classroom, to newsroom, and to real world, Hauwa’s intellectual exhibition is not to cause commotions or receive undue attention and glorification.

Her scholarship is here to stay, to extend linguistic evangelism beyond the bricks of the conventional classrooms and to highlight and unleash interdisciplinary relevance not just to the world of learning but to the world of those who undermine the power of women in nation building and development.

Of course, many may wonder what a language scholar has got to present in the just concluded life science-related discourse. Believe me, you won’t cease to ponder over the rare expertise Associate Professor Hauwa Muhammed Sani exudes in the craft of blending linguistics with numerous courses in academia.

She is the kind who strongly believes linguistics is irrelevant, if it does not bring relevance. And such relevance lies in the application of linguistics not only to other academic disciplines but also to those aspects of life that need remedies and amendments to breed national and sustainable development.

This is not an exaggeration. It is not the usual way of clothing deficiency in flamboyant words. It is a true depiction of a woman who makes scholarship an enviable profession not because the pay is enormous but because through her total commitment to scholarship, voices of women will be heard, underrated power of women will shine through and the world at large will undergo a complete transformation through transdisciplinarity.

The occasion of UNIMAID’s Microbiology Department’s first International Conference themed: “Microbial Innovation for Global Food Security and Sustainable Development” held on Tuesday, 8th July, 2025 brought together two fecund minds: Former Vice Chancellor, Bauchi State University (now, Sa’adu Zungur University); Professor Auwal Uba and Associate Professor Hauwa Muhammed Sani, Deputy Director, Institute for Development, Research and Training, ABU Zaria and a scholar of language, communication and peace whose keynote was more than a lecture. It felt like an opportunity to unveil those mind-blowing thoughts that had long been engraved in mind.

She delivered with poise, spoke with conviction and presented herself not just as a lecturer but as an alumna of the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University who combines talent, training and toil.

To those women out there, marriage and motherhood are not obstructions to dreams. They are catalysts for personal and professional growth if well managed. May Associate Professor Hauwa Muhammed Sani continue to remain exemplary.
