Grandmother flees as police investigate illegal abortion on teenage rape victim

Story by Susan Mbamah

A grandmother, Mrs. Otabor, has reportedly fled her home in Benin City after arranging an illegal abortion for her 15-year-old granddaughter.

The teenager was allegedly raped and impregnated by a self-proclaimed cleric, Prophet Paul Lawani, 70, who has since been arrested by the Edo State Police Command.

According to police, the victim confessed to her grandmother after showing signs of pregnancy.

A pregnancy test conducted by a local nurse confirmed she was two months pregnant before the abortion was carried out. The grandmother then fled her residence in the Upper Uwa quarters.
The case came to light when the victim confided in a neighbor, who then alerted the authorities.

Lawani, upon his arrest, admitted to knowing the teenager but refused to provide more information. The victim’s grandfather, Mr. Jeremiah Otabor, condemned the cleric and has vowed to cooperate with law enforcement.
