Grain prices drop in Ngelzarma market, Yobe

‎By Kasim Isa Muhammad

‎There is a fresh wave of relief among residents and traders in Ngelzarma town, Fune Local Government Area of Yobe State, following a significant drop in the prices of major food commodities, particularly grains.

‎The Ngelzarma grain market, which serves as a key trading hub in the region, recorded noticeable declines in prices of maize, millet, sorghum, beans, and other essential staples this week.

‎A market survey conducted on Saturday, June 28, 2025, shows that a standard bag of maize is now selling between ₦45,000 and ₦46,000, while millet is going for between ₦52,000 and ₦54,000.

‎For beans consumers, there has also been a slight relief. A bag of white beans is now sold at ₦85,000 to ₦86,000, while the large variety of red beans has dropped to between ₦88,000 and ₦90,000.

‎The drop is not limited to the major grains alone. Other items such as dried roselle flower (Zobo) are now being sold at ₦20,000 to ₦21,000 per bag. While melon is currently going for ₦44,000 to ₦45,000 for one variant, and ₦33,000 to ₦35,000 for another.

‎Polished rice remains relatively stable at ₦125,000 per bag, but prices for broken or locally processed rice vary depending on quality. Groundnut is being sold at ₦130,000 to ₦135,000. While sorghum is priced between ₦40,000 and ₦41,000.

‎Similarly, some women selling beans and groundnuts confirmed that prices had dropped by ₦2,000 to ₦3,000 in just the last few days, particularly due to bulk arrival from Damagum and Nangere villages. However, they noted that demand from buyers in southern Nigeria continues to influence some prices, especially for beans and groundnut.

‎Local families in Ngelzarma have welcomed the development, especially at a time when food consumption is expected to rise with the ongoing rainy season. Residents say the decline in prices will help them manage household spending and prepare better for the months ahead.
