Gov. Buni launches ‘State Equity’ health insurance for 38,000 residents

Yobe State Governor,Mai Mala Buni has on Monday reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to strengthening Primary Health Care (PHC) across Yobe State, citing significant progress and new initiatives aimed at expanding coverage, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Speaking at a high-level stakeholder meeting in Damaturu attended by Royal monarchs, religious leaders, development partners, Ministry of Health staff, PHC Management Board officials, and Civil Society Organisations, Governor Buni outlined his vision for accessible and affordable healthcare as the cornerstone of socio-economic development.

He acknowledged the support of the Federal Government and development partners, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Aliko Dangote Foundation, UNICEF, and WHO, among others.

He emphasised the state’s commitment to healthcare delivery, citing the establishment of 142 functional primary healthcare centres, provision of equipment and drugs, and the recruitment of over 2,000 qualified healthcare personnel.

The governor highlighted the state’s achievements, including emerging as the 2024 North East Zonal Champion for Primary Health Care (PHC) Leadership Challenge.

He also mentioned the establishment of the Yobe State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (YSCHMA) and Yobe State Drugs and Medical Consumables Management Agency (YODMA) to address healthcare financing and drug supply.

Buni revealed plans to commence the State Equity Programme, which will provide health insurance cover to over 38,000 vulnerable women and under-five children across the state.

He urged traditional rulers to support and contribute to strengthening primary healthcare service delivery in their domains.

The governor urged all stakeholders to take note of the issues deliberated at the meeting and address existing loopholes in their domains and areas of operation to further improve primary healthcare delivery.
