Gov. Buni calls on NIMC to strengthen database integrity during ‘NIN Day’ 2025

Story from Ibraheem El-Tafseer

Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, CON, has urged the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to ensure accuracy and reliability when issuing National Identification Numbers (NIN) to citizens and legal residents, emphasizing the importance of a credible identity database.

The governor made the call during a meeting with the NIMC management team at Government House, Damaturu, as part of the state’s celebration of NIN Day 2025.

The Governor represented by his deputy, Alhaji Idi Barde Gubana (Wazirin Fune), explained that the National Identification Number is a unique lifetime identifier and a definitive means of verifying an individual’s identity. He stressed that full registration of legal residents is essential for gathering reliable population data and enabling access to essential services for all residents.

Governor Buni also pledged logistical support to the commission to aid its efforts across all political wards in the state, ensuring more widespread registration efforts.

Mr. Zaman Yaksha, State Coordinator of NIMC Yobe Office, informed the Governor that September 16 has been designated annually to mark NIN Day, aimed at raising awareness about the significance of national identification. The day includes a road campaign targeting grassroots communities to educate and mobilise them toward registration.

He added that a recent directive from the Presidency mandates registration for all Nigerians, regardless of age. Echoing Buni’s commitment, the NIMC coordinator thanked the Yobe State Government for its ongoing support and revealed that, under current peace and stability in the state, the commission plans to reach all political wards within the 17 local government areas.
