Former Equatorial Guinea official, Baltasar, gets 8-year jail term for embezzlement

A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced former senior government official Baltasar Ebang Engonga to eight years in prison for embezzlement.

The conviction comes months after Engonga was at the center of an international scandal involving leaked sex videos.

The Bioko provincial tribunal found Engonga guilty of diverting public funds by claiming professional travel expenses for personal use. The ruling was confirmed by Hilario Mitogo, the press director of the Supreme Court, who provided details to reporters.

Engonga, also known as “Bello,” was the former Director-General of the National Agency for Financial Investigation. He was tried alongside five other officials accused of misappropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars in state resources.

Engonga first gained global attention in November 2024 when a series of sex videos involving him, some reportedly filmed inside his finance ministry office, were leaked on social media while he was in detention awaiting trial.
