Food prices drop in Nangere’s grain market

‎Story from Kasim Isa Muhammad

‎There is a growing sense of relief among residents and traders in Nangere Local Government Area of Yobe State as food prices in the local grain market show signs of stability and slight reduction.

‎On Thursday, 29th May 2025, the popular grain market experienced moderate drops in the cost of several staple food items, offering some comfort to households grappling with the high cost of living.

‎According to findings from the market, maize is now being sold between ₦51,000 and ₦53,000 per 100kg bag. Millet follows closely at ₦55,000 to ₦58,000. For guinea corn, sells for ₦42,000 to ₦44,000. White beans is currently being sold for ₦93,000 to ₦95,000, whereas the larger variety of white beans ranges from ₦85,000 to ₦94,000.

‎Red beans are slightly more expensive, with a price range of ₦98,000 to ₦100,000.

‎Other notable prices include Zobo (Roselle leaves) at ₦20,000 to ₦21,000, and Melon, a locally consumed grain, selling between ₦28,000 and ₦35,000.

‎ The price of rice remains relatively high at ₦125,000 per 100kg bag. Groundnut is currently going for ₦130,000 to ₦135,000.

‎An additional batch of Melon is being sold at ₦41,000 to ₦43,000, while Akpuro from Ngalda is priced between ₦21,000 and ₦23,000.

‎Traders attribute the reduction in prices to increased food supply and improvements in transportation following recent rainfall and easing of fuel costs.

‎ “We thank God, things are getting a bit better,” said a local trader. “With more food arriving in the market, people are able to buy more and eat better.”

‎Neptune Prime noted that for residents who have endured months of inflation and food insecurity, the current market situation is a welcome development.
