Flood displaces families in Adamawa, rescue efforts intensify

Barely two months after a deadly flood claimed more than 30 lives in Adamawa State, another wave of flooding has struck, leaving dozens of households homeless.

The downpour, forecast last Friday by the federal weather agency, began around 4 a.m. on Tuesday and continued until midday, submerging parts of the state capital.

When PUNCH visited some of the affected areas, worship centres, homes and businesses were seen under water.

In Damilu, along the airport road, residents struggled to protect family members as their belongings were swept away after hours of heavy rainfall.

Neighbourhoods such as Jambutu, Bachure, Runde and Shinko in Yola-North Local Government Area were also hard hit, with thousands forced to shelter by the roadside.

Dr Celine Laori, Executive Secretary of the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), described the flood as devastating. “So far, no life has been lost. My office, the police, fire service and other security agencies are all carrying out rescue operations now in those affected areas,” she told PUNCH.

Police spokesman SP Suleiman Nguroje said marine police have been deployed for rescue efforts, adding that Commissioner of Police, CP Dankombo Morris, had personally visited affected areas such as Limiwa, Rumde, Shinko and Jambutu to assess the situation.

The command advised residents to remain calm, avoid flooded zones and prioritise the safety of their families and property, assuring that security agencies remain committed to safeguarding lives and belongings during and after the crisis.
