FG issues fresh flood alert to 9 northern states
The Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Center (FEW Center) has issued a new flood alert for nine northern states, warning that heavy rainfall could cause flooding between August 25 and 29, 2025.
In a circular signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina have been placed on red alert.
Other states at risk include Adamawa, Borno, Sokoto, and Zamfara.
Adamawa and Katsina have the highest number of towns on the flood alert, including Mubi, Shelleng, and Abba-Kumbo in Adamawa, and Katsina, Kaita, and Bindawa in Katsina.

Other towns listed on the watchlist are Gwaram in Jigawa; Nafada in Gombe; Ngala in Borno; Sumaila in Kano; Anka and Makira in Zamfara and Sokoto, respectively. Bauchi State has two areas on the list: Azare and Jama’are.
Bokani urged relevant stakeholders to report any emerging situations in their states.

This new warning comes just one week after the center issued a flood alert for seven northern states, advising communities along the River Niger from Jebba to Lokoja to evacuate due to rising water levels.
