Police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested a man posing as a medical doctor after a botched abortion allegedly led to the death of a 35-year-old woman at his clinic in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area.
The suspect, identified as Sunday Okon Akpan, owns Full Life Medical Centre in Ikot Obio Odong. Investigations revealed that Akpan is a community health practitioner with no medical or nursing license.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, Akpan was arrested on August 19 following reports from the victim’s family. The deceased, Blessing Sunday Etim, reportedly died after undergoing an illegal abortion at the clinic.

“On Tuesday, 19 August, at about 0930 hours, a man was arrested on suspicion of conducting an illegal abortion that resulted in the death of a 35-year-old woman,” DSP John said. The arrest came after the victim’s mother raised alarm over her daughter’s sudden death.
Police further reported that the suspect attempted to hide the victim’s body by sneaking it into a co-tenant’s room. When confronted, he reportedly fled the scene. Detectives who arrived at the clinic observed a premature fetus, confirming a failed abortion.
Investigations also revealed that Akpan had been operating the clinic illegally, offering unsafe medical services, including abortions. Full Life Medical Centre is now deserted.
“The suspect, a resident of Afaha Offiong in Nsit Ibom LGA, is not a licensed medical doctor or nurse but a community health practitioner. He used the facility to perform illegal medical procedures,” DSP John said.
