EFCC arraigns FBI suspect, Godslove Obiwuru over crypto wallet takeover
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned one Godslove Munachiso Obiwuru, a 26-year-old suspect, before the Federal High Court sitting in Enugu on charges of money laundering relating to a cryptocurrency wallet.
Obiwuru is wanted by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in connection with an alleged account takeover involving stolen digital assets.
He appeared before Justice M. T. Segun-Bello, who presided over the matter in the Independence Layout division of Enugu.
The prosecution filed a two-count charge against him, alleging that sometime in 2022, Obiwuru retained 0.042 Ethereum (worth about $50) in a Binance wallet address he knew, or ought to have known, was linked to unlawful acts.

Count one cites Section 20(a) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. Obiwuru pleaded “not guilty” to the charges presented.
Following his plea, EFCC counsel, Assistant Superintendent A. Y. Abdullahi, asked the court to fix a trial date and asked that the defendant be remanded.
Defence counsel, Abel Anih, requested that he be given a short date to file an application for bail.
Justice Segun-Bello adjourned the case to allow for the bail application to be heard, and ordered that Obiwuru be held in EFCC custody until then.

According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, Obiwuru was arrested on August 5, 2025, under a petition by the FBI alleging his involvement in a cryptocurrency account takeover scheme.
The petition claimed that in November 2022, a Coinbase account belonging to a U.S. citizen was compromised and stripped of 90,410.126 “Gold Retriever Tokens” (GLDN), worth approximately $307,394 at the time.
Investigations by the FBI traced part of the stolen funds to a Binance wallet belonging to Obiwuru, per the defect.
Further findings by the EFCC’s Enugu Zonal Directorate Special Task Force indicated that Obiwuru allegedly received stolen cryptocurrency from two separate victims.
